The project begun with the desire to investigate a possible human colonisation of the ocean, during the Midwaterist residency in Poros Island, Greece. The aim was to understand the behaviour of a human being in an hypothetical aquatic life and to analyse the significance of dwelling an underwater habitat. The ongoing fashion of establishing a human society on Mars seems a dream far from being fulfilled. It would take three years to travel to the red planet, only once every two years when the Earth is aligned to the right direction, 1/3 of the expeditions on Mars have gone wrong and even if mankind would step into it, there’s no atmosphere to breathe.

Underwater there is no atmosphere, no wifi, no electricity but the idea of colonising the ocean seems way more achievable than Mars. The sea is under our feet and yet only 2% of it is known, its vast and voluptuous water proliferate with life and resources for the human being. Life on Mars is a western and phallocentric ideology that brings human apart from Earth and does not create a strong bond with nature and its creatures. Hydrofeminist Astrida Neimanis proposes to create a new relationship with the sea, Mother Sea, the placenta from where all creature come from, respect and embody. The sea leads human beings into a more unified creature, not one who seeks separation and self-gratification but one who seeks coalition and collaboration.
